"Agape" Remix cover art

Allow me to introduce you to my new project: ‘Atmaspheric’. The Atmaspheric project is all about tunes that you wouldn’t necessarily hear on the main space of a club or festival because they are deeper, a little subtler, and more about the journey than the drop. Tunes that still have sexy beats and body moving Bass frequencies, but they make you want to close your eyes and get your liquid moves on rather than pumping your fist in the air and screaming at the speaker stacks. Atmospherics (yes I said it) before pyrotechnics.

Over the past couple of years I have found myself wanting to make more of the music that balances the bangers. The deeper, less obvious stuff that fuels the more contemplative moments in our lives. It doesn’t have to be just purely listening music but it could be. It doesn’t have to have live instruments in it but it probably does. And it definitely doesn’t have to include whale noises… but I guess it could do. Tho none have surfaced yet :). It’s a blend of West Coast Templestep beats, the chill end of the World Bass scene, a healthy dose of melodic post-everything dub probably from the UK or old school Jamaican Dub and Reggae records, and who can forget the funk? Where they meet is where Atmaspheric starts.

I’ve played many sets of this kind of music in the Yoga of Bass sessions that Claire and I have been doing (www.YogaOfBass.com), in fact this was how the Atmaspheric project first appeared in the world. It was so different from the FreQ Nasty sound that I felt I had to have some way of differentiating it and that’s how the new name came about. ‘Atma’ means the True Self in the Yogic philosophy – the self we connect with when we’re deep into our tunes, lost in music and beyond the mundane existence of everyday life. The ‘Music of the Spheres’ is an ancient principle that describes the universe as organized via various qualities or ‘tones’ that appear to us as proportion, shape, and form and the mathematical relationships between them. So I kind of liked both ideas and cobbled them together to create a word which described the intention I had for the sound of the music – atmospheric. Hence ‘Atmaspheric’.

My first track is a remix of the Dead Can Dance tune “Agape” from their newest album. I tried to keep as much of the original in place adding some sexy beats and a touch of 808 Bass to hold it all together. I’ve been playing this slinky arabesque dancehall remix out in the Dub Kirtan All Stars DJ sets already, so some of you may have heard it. (www.dubkirtan.com)

If you like it, go and check out the original and support Dead Can Dance, an amazing band. And keep your eyes peeled for the ‘Transform EP’, a 4 track Atmaspheric release which will be with you soon enough. Enjoy!
