One of the earliest FreQ / Skint releases, featuring ‘Fresh’, available on ‘Bring Me The Head Of FreQ Nasty’, and exclusive b-side ‘One More Time’.
“‘Fresh’ started life as a tune I was helping my good friends Dutch breaks DJs Loes Lee and Peter Maneater with. It was their tune and I was helping out with the drums and bass. When I had finished the mix, I was listening over to it and ended up taking their samples out, changing the drums and bass, and added a bunch of my own music. Before I knew it I had a new tune.
The highs we’re unbelievably harsh in mastering (my fault) and I never quite got it right. It used to go down pretty well tho.
‘One More Time’ was a nod to the progressive house sound that was universally huge at the time. I added a bit of a hip-hop element but to be honest I felt I was suffering from trying to go from a full analogue mixing set up with a mixing desk and a load of outboard equipment to a digital set-up in the computer. The plug-ins were nowhere near as good as they are today and I now realize the skills of mixing on a desk and mixing ‘in the box’ are different in many ways.”
